My dissertation focuses on the energetics of motherhood in wild Bornean orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus wurmbii). I combine several sets of data, including feeding behavior, nutritional analysis of food items, and analysis of urinary metabolites to paint a better picture of what's happening to an orangutan mother through an infant's development. This question is particularly fascinating because orangutans are the largest arboreal mammal, yet they exist in one of the most marginal, nutrient-deficient tropical habitats.
